Turmi & The Hamar
A Journey of Pride, Tradition, and Hospitality
The Cultural Highlight of the South
Turmi is more than a village; it is the spiritual center of the **Hamar people**. Renowned for their sociability and pride, the Hamar have embraced a sustainable approach to tourism that allows visitors an authentic glimpse into their ancient way of life amidst the beautiful savanna landscape.
The Leaping of the Cattle
To transition from boy to man, a Hamar initiate must walk four times across the backs of a row of cattle. This intense ceremony, usually held after the harvests (Aug–Nov and Jan–Apr), is a spectacular display of courage and a cornerstone of Hamar identity.
The ceremony also involves the symbolic whipping of the boy's female relatives, who carry their scars as a badge of pride and a lifelong bond of protection from the initiate.
Turmi as Your Base
With its strategic location and quality lodging, Turmi is the perfect anchor for deeper exploration into the Southern Omo region.
